"Flak-Bait" is one of the most remarkable aircraft in American military history. This B-26B Marauder, serial number 41-31173, flew 202 combat missions with the 449th Bombardment Squadron, 322nd Bombardment Group of the 9th Air Force from April 1943 to April 1945. No other American aircraft in the European Theater flew more missions. The bomber survived incredible punishment, returning from missions with hundreds of flak holes, yet it always brought its crew home.
The name "Flak-Bait" was both defiant and darkly humorous. Flak – anti-aircraft artillery fire – was the greatest threat to Allied bombers over Europe. German 88mm guns could fill the sky with deadly shrapnel, and B-26 crews flew through it on every mission. Naming the aircraft "Flak-Bait" was a way of thumbing their nose at the danger, acknowledging the threat while refusing to be intimidated by it. The cartoon character nose art added personality to the defiance.
The B-26 Marauder had a controversial reputation early in the war. Its high wing loading and hot landing characteristics earned it nicknames like "Widowmaker" and "Flying Prostitute" (no visible means of support). But once crews mastered the aircraft, the B-26 proved to be one of the most effective medium bombers of WWII, with the lowest loss rate of any American bomber in Europe. "Flak-Bait" exemplified what the Marauder could do in skilled hands.
Over its 202 missions, "Flak-Bait" attacked bridges, rail yards, airfields, and other tactical targets across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. The aircraft was hit by flak on numerous occasions, returning with holes in the wings, fuselage, and tail. It went through multiple engines, had parts replaced constantly, and was patched and repaired after nearly every mission. But it kept flying, and it kept bringing crews home.
The bomber's survival was a testament to both the ruggedness of the B-26 and the skill of the ground crews who maintained it. After each mission, mechanics would patch the holes, replace damaged parts, and get "Flak-Bait" ready for the next sortie. The aircraft became a symbol of resilience and determination for the entire squadron.
After the war, "Flak-Bait" was returned to the United States and eventually donated to the Smithsonian Institution. Today, the aircraft is being restored and will be displayed at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, where future generations can see the most-flown bomber in the European Theater and learn its incredible story.
Whether you're a WWII veteran who flew or maintained B-26s, a descendant of the Greatest Generation, an aviation enthusiast who appreciates survival against the odds, or a history buff who loves the stories behind the aircraft, this "Flak-Bait" nose art t-shirt connects you to one of the most legendary bombers in American history. It's more than a shirt – it's a tribute to courage, resilience, and the crews who kept coming back.
